Bloom + Ivy in Crisp Cottons

This week on the blog, we feature our Make by TFS Bloom Dress and Ivy Top in two beautiful new crisp and airy cottons.
A super exciting shipment of new season cottons in bold checks, stripes, and ginghams have arrived from Japan! Lightweight cottons like these are ideal for shirtdresses and tops, and we think our Bloom Dress and Ivy Top below make the perfect fabric + pattern pairings. How fresh is this Bloom Dress in cotton? We are loving the minimalist feel and versatile trans-seasonal layering vibes!
To achieve this look we made a few small adjustments to the pattern, including omitting the collars and just using the narrow collar stand from the box pleated collar option in the pattern nest. We also decided to leave out the side pockets on this dress and we whipped up a narrow waist tie using the selvedge edge of our fabric. Shirtdresses are an effortless wardrobe essential, and this chic lightweight version is no exception!

Making a few small adjustments for this pattern we transformed this Bloom Dress into a collarless dress by using the smaller collar stand from the Box Pleated Collar option. We also decided to remove the side pockets as the cotton was slightly sheer ( and didn't want the pocket bags showing through ) and lastly, we created a narrow tie measuring 1cm x 170 cm. This pattern is available exclusively in our Online Store here!
How fresh is this new take on Bloom Dress! We are really loving the clean minimal feel and such a versatile make for transeasonal layering!
How incredible is this navy and pink check cotton?! It's a little transparent so we decided to make a few adjustments for Priyanka's Ivy Top. We constructed the top with french seams, which was slow going as we used the original 1cm seam allowance! If you aren't familliar with French seaming, there are loads of videos on YouTube, like this one here from Made to Sew.
We also added internal bias binding to this Ivy Top (cut from the same fabric) rather than overlocking for an ultra-clean finish. This meant finishing the neckline and the centre back opening with bias binding too, instead of using the facing pieces. These adaptations definitely took extra time but we are super pleased with how immaculate the garment looks inside, as well as out. Such a sweet pattern to pair with this beautiful fabric, the perfect feel-good piece for springtime soirées or beachside picnics!
