Our Ivy Dress + Top pattern is a balance of volume and classic detail, and makes a great pattern to try out in silks and sheer fabrics!

The Dress (View A) features a boxy straight-fit through the bodice with a dropped waist and a generous gathered full skirt, in-seam pockets, and a deep turned-back hem. It features a faced centre back neck opening and three collar options, including a peter pan collar, fully faced round neck, or a tie back collar. The pattern can be made up sleeveless, with a short sleeve (using the indication lines provided), or with a full-length sleeve gathered at the wrist. If you choose to make the full-length gathered sleeve, you have the option of a button tab cuff or a tie cuff. Phew, options galore!

We used the Ivy Dress pattern in size 8 for Annelise, selecting the round neck and button cuff options, and this used 3.5m of this 115cm wide silk plus three of our Trocas Shell Buttons in Smoke. Because we used silk for this dress, a few adjustments were made to the Ivy Dress pattern to ensure a tidy finish. The first was to omit the side seam pockets and leave off the facing on the bodice neckline. To finish the round neckline we simply added a 1cm wide internal binding around the neck edge, plus slightly narrower 6mm binding to the back neck opening. This was quite simple to sew and we think it gives the neckline a clean modern finish.

We used french seams for most of the interior seams as well as bias binding for the waist seam, which worked perfectly for this sheer silk. Just for fun, we also adjusted the width of the sleeve cuff to 1.5cm and added a small rouleau loop for the button, rather than a buttonhole. We're loving the end result, and can't get past how beautiful that Bottle green colourway is!

Sheer Check Silk — Bottle

Fresh into stores and online recently is a beautiful palette of nine deadstock Sheer Check Silk colours! This luxurious fabric has been woven with a georgette base and a thicker silk yarn stripe on both the warp and weft which combine to create a check pattern. The thicker checked yarns give this completely sheer fabric a subtle lustre. It's a super drapey fabric with no stretch, perfect for an Ivy Dress like this one!
