Steph's Self Drafted Skirt

Have you heard of self drafting? In sewing terms, this means that instead of sewing with a pre-purchased pattern, you create a custom pattern by yourself! If this sounds daunting, don't panic. This example shown by HQ team member Steph shows you that a self-drafted skirt can be made with a super simple method. Read on for details and photos!
Fabric Used — 2m of Motif Jacquard Cotton Shirting - Hickory
Elastic Used — 1m of Woven Elastic 50mm - Black
To make this skirt, Steph simply cut two 1m lengths of cotton, sewed them together up the sides with a 1cm seam. She utilised the full width of the cotton and the selvedges, which meant no need to do any further seam finishing like overlocking. She then folded over the top 5cm + 1cm for the elastic waistband casing, added the two feature pin tucks part way down the skirt, as well as a deep turned back hem. This is such a simple skirt and Steph says she gets so many compliments on it from her non-sewing friends! This fabric is a lovely soft, almost brushed cotton that Steph says feels easy and comfy to wear. The length makes it perfectly wearable for all seasons, lightly or with layers! Overall, Steph says she would recommend a self-drafted project like this for any skill level - it’s nice and easy for beginners or makes for a fun palette cleanser for advanced sewists between other complex projects!
