With spring finally nipping at our heels here in the southern hemisphere, lighter, brighter makes are on the TFS team radar! Our recent drop of Liberty prints has us swooning, showcasing a confection of spring-worthy colours like baby blue and lemon yellow, alongside an array of red and pink hued florals! Beth has made this very chic fit and flare dress using a fit and flare dress pattern she found on Etsy. Read on below for details and photos, kindly modelled by Beth herself.

"I chose the pattern for it's unique shaping around the bust, and I like to be able to support the smaller indie pattern makers!"

Pattern Used — Fit and Flare Low Back Dress by Kiana Bonollo Designs

Beth is an advanced sewist and was able to adapt this pattern to suit the style of dress she wanted to make. She made a size 12, with the entire bodice made exactly to the pattern instructions and a few customisations to the skirt. Beth chose to split the skirt panel into three, lengthen the panels, add pockets and lay the pattern out in a minimal waste layplan. For this dress she used 3.5m of beautiful Liberty Augusta Linen / Cotton - Brighton Rose and 1.5m of white Organic Cotton Poplin for lining.

Beth said she found this project great and would highly recommend it for intermediate sewists. She found the YouTube instructional video super helpful, and said the instructions were easy to follow. The project took Beth around 15 hours, with most of that being taken up by trying the bodice on many times to get the perfect fit! She also hand stitched the interior lining.

If you'd like to try this pattern at home, you can download it from Etsy here.

"I’m planning to wear this dress to a close friend’s fall wedding in America this year. The idea is to pair it with a pair of low strappy heels and a white chunky knit shawl I’m currently making up to keep away the chills. And definitely a low bun with pearl drop earrings to show off the open back!"

Fabric Suggestions

Beth Used — Liberty Augusta Linen / Cotton - Brighton Rose

Kiana suggests using light to medium weight woven fabrics for this pattern. Think satin back crepes, cotton lawns and poplins, soft linens and silks! Don't forget your lining fabric will need to be similar to your outer shell in weight and drape.

We've picked out a few recent arrivals that would suit this pattern from our Online Store. From top to bottom below are our Liberty Augusta Linen / Cotton - Ed / X, Plain Weave Linen - Iceberg, Banana Flower Cotton Twill - Marmalade Mix, Plain Weave Linen - Rose Vale and Liberty Tana Lawn - Melody Small / C
