Steph's Christmas Stockings
05—December 2023
This week HQ sewist Steph has made a bunch of cute DIY christmas stockings!
If you're keen to make your own Christmas stockings this holiday season, this DIY set made by Steph from TFS HQ is sure to be inspiring! Steph personalised her stockings with the initials of her four nephews and nieces, too cute! She used our Vanilla Heavyweight Linen, plus a little of our Vintage Blush, Cloud, Red Clay and Army colours for each letter. This stripey cotton made for a playful lining, and Steph fused the linen to give the stockings extra stability.
Making your own stockings is a wonderful way to make Christmas even more special! If you'd like to try making your own with the beautiful blackletter style like Steph has done, use this stocking shape from our 2022 blog post, and this pattern for the letters. Steph fused the linen before she cut out the pieces and used a paper-piecing technique to make the quilted initial for each stocking. Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP) is a piecing technique in quilt making and Steph followed this blog tutorial to learn the process!
Once the letter blocks were sewn up, she inserted them into the stocking shapes and patiently marked the quilting lines with a fabric pen. Steph used this batting and sewed the lines on the stocking front and back pieces before putting it all together. The final step was finishing the tops with matching bias binding and a loop to hang them on Christmas Eve.
