Just in time for the cold snap, Steph from our marketing team made up the Cortland Trench from Grainline Studio! Inspired by this version on Insta, Steph picked our midweight Maple Organic Linen and sewed it to perfection. A trench coat is a very special addition to any handmade wardrobe and if you've been thinking about making one, this post is for you! Grainline Studio — Cortland Trench

The Cortland Trench is a modern classic, with raglan sleeves, storm flaps, all the pockets and a generous collar. It is unlined, with bound interior seams and a double breasted front closure. Grainline recommend this for intermediate level sewists, with techniques including sewing a straight seam, welt pockets, topstitching, sewing a collar and collar stand, inserting buttonholes, and hand sewing. Steph made a size 8, and this took 3.5m of our Maple Organic Linen. As an advanced sewist, Steph was able to make several modifications to the pattern, including lengthening the hem by 55cm, adding a belt and belt loops, adding in a vent and moving the welt pockets down 10cm. Steph found the instructions clear for this pattern and is looking forward to sewing more detailed garments like this to improve her finishing skills. We love how this turned out in our Organic Linen, and can imagine it looking beautiful in lots of other colours from the range.

Fabric Suggestions

Steph used — Organic Linen - Maple

Grainline recommend using lightweight coatings or medium weight fabrics between 5 – 8 oz, such as cotton or tencel twill, gabardine, or linen. Whatever fabric you choose, it's always important to ensure it has drape to allow the silhouette of the coat to hang properly.
