Project Notes
Millie is a playful two-piece set from designer Alli Marye, with charming scalloped edges, a low back, and long flowing drawstrings. The tank top has a boxy, relaxed fit that is designed to be gathered with the back drawstring, creating a flared silhouette. The skirt is a simple wrap, with a matching scalloped hem. Seeking something summery and festive, Olivia made up a size 4 using 2.6m of Classic Cotton Poplin in the colour Taffy, plus 1.2m of the colour Ketchup, for custom binding. She used two spools of matching threads, plus 4m of our Ketchup ready-made Bias Binding for the drawstring. This is a beginner/moderate level pattern, and Olivia is a beginner sewist, so the project was a nice challenge for her! The only adjustments she made were to increase the size of the darts a little, and to make the skirt drawstrings go all the way around. She said she loves the end result, and the only change would make if she were to sew it again, would be to increase the wrap of the skirt so there is a little less leg visible.
"This was my first time making my own binding as I wanted the same look as the sample with the wide binding all the way round — I actually really enjoyed the process. It was methodical and the final iron was very satisfying! I’ve also never sewn binding around such big curves before, so I took my time to do it as well as I could. It doesn’t sit completely neat and flat, but it came out better than I expected!"
"I really hope I wear this set a lot over summer and it doesn’t get relegated to the ‘special occasions’ section of my wardrobe. It’s A LOT, but I think the fabric gives it a more casual feel, plus it’s very comfortable and easy to throw on."
