May Jean
The May Jean is a classic high waist jean pattern set, featuring a zip fly closure, high rise fit and five pocket construction - an ideal wardrobe staple! May comes with three leg cuts - View A - Straight Leg, View B - Wide Leg and View C - Shaped Leg. The leg hem finishes at the ankle bone and the length can be easily adjusted using the indication lines provided on the pattern. The May Jean pairs seamlessly with our Make by TFS patterns, including the Fog Tee, Bloom Shirt, Ivy Top and Cloud Sweatshirt!
May Sizing + Fit
May comes in our NZ 4-32 size range and is high waisted close fit through the waist and waistband. We recommend referring to both the garment measurements and the body measurements when selecting a size, regardless of what size you wear in ready-to-wear clothing.
Our patterns are drafted for a height of 172cm (5'7"). You may wish to lengthen or shorten the body and sleeve hem depending on your height and personal preference and change the location of the pockets. If you wish to adjust the fit through the bust, we recommend using the bust apex points provided on the patterns.
A hand made pair of jeans is a considerable investment and a garment that is designed for maximum longevity in your wardrobe. We strongly recommend sewing a toile (sample garment) in a calico fabric (or similar) prior to cutting your final jean. This will ensure you have the opportunity to make any alterations in length or fit to the jean pattern using an inexpensive fabric. Sewing a toile requires additional time, but we consider this time well spent for a project of this type!
Fabric Recommendations
The May Jean is designed for medium to heavy weight woven fabric. We highly recommend using denim, and we love how May looks in our range of Upcycled Cotton Denim fabrics, available in a handful of tonal shades in stores and online. Alternatively, you could try a sturdy cotton drill or corduroy. You will also need a lightweight woven fabric, preferably non-stretch, to use for pocketing.
