Scrunchies

For this DIY, you’ll need:

— Sewing shears
— Fabric remnants or scraps of your choice
— A hand-sewing needle
— 6mm elastic
— A safety pin
— Thread and your sewing machine!

We chose to feature a range of fabrics that give a playful textural element when gathered including Silk Crepe De Chine - Cadet Grey, Silk / Viscose Velvet - Rain, Linen - Chartreuse & Liberty Of London Tana Lawn - Progeny / C. We cut a 9cm wide by 56cm long strip of fabric for each scrunchie but you could increase the width or length if you'd like it wider or more gathered. A single scrunchie took 20cm of 6mm elastic, but again you can adjust this depending on how wide or loose you would prefer your scrunchie.

To sew your scrunchie, fold your fabric in half lengthwise with the right sides of the fabric together. Stitch a 1cm seam allowance along the length, stopping 5cm from one end to create a gap of approximately 3cm (this gap allows you to turn through and bag out the scrunchie). Continue sewing to the end to create a tube. See the image below as a reference for where your gap should sit.

Next, attach your safety pin to one end of the tube and turn it through halfway with the right sides together, so that both raw edges meet (make sure that the 3cm gap is facing out).
Align the raw edge end seams and hand sew the short ends together with a 6mm seam allowance. Turn the tube right side out through the 3cm gap, thread your elastic through and then sew the ends of the elastic together. Lastly, blind stitch the gap shut and your scrunchie is complete!
